BRECKENRIDGE - Competitors in the A Racer's Edge Summit Mountain Challenge couldn't have asked for a better finale to their season - a challenging course and ideal weather came together to provide the setting for some great racing at Wednesday's Breckenridge Brawl...

This group of women's expert riders from left, Kathy Bodie, Angie Vossler and Ann James make their way up the road toward Ten Mile Station while riding in the final race of the Summit Mountain Challenge series, the Breck Brawl, on Peak 9 Wednesday evening.

SUMMIT COUNTY - Fire up the weight room training and start shopping for indoor trainers. The 2004 mountain bike season isn't as far away as you think. "(Racing) doesn't get any better than it is here," Maverick Sports race promoter Mike McCormack said. "It's not about racing your bike; it's about riding it." While Maverick Sports has yet to announce venues, the dates are more or less set in stone for the 18th annual Summit Mountain Challenge.

Warriors Represent in Moab 24 Hours

The Arapaho Warriors

Considering Summit County had roughly seven dozen participants in the race, there are likely seven dozen stories to go along with.
Take the Arapaho Warriors Women's Team, for instance. At one point, the girls were riding for second place in the women's sport competition. Then Frisco's Susha Kopp had a chaotic night lap. She flipped off of her bike twice, twisted her ankle rather badly, watched both of her lighting systems fail and had to change a flat tire in the dark. The setbacks kept Kopp on the course for well over an hour longer than expected and set the girl's back to ninth place. In the ensuing 14 hours, however, teammates Jen Drimmer of Keystone, Rebecca Trainor of Summit Cove and Chris Costa of Fairplay each picked off a rider from other teams, moving them back up to fifth place by the end of the race. Kopp herself even went back out on a loop despite having an ankle that was so swollen she could barely walk.
On the team's last lap, Costa set a blistering pace to set the team's course record of 1:31 in an attempt to get Kopp back on course in similar fashion to the Divas chaotic final moments. She only missed the cutoff by a minute and a half.

Brett Morgan, an expert rider from Summit Cove that also rides for the Warriors, rode his first 24-hour solo event of his racing career and finished in ninth place, against a talented field of 60.
After finishing his fifth loop, just before 7:30 p.m., he looked at his team coach Thane Wright, an experienced 24-hour solo racer, and said, "This is so much more difficult than I ever imagined."
Just the same, Morgan never took longer than 15 minutes to break, and rode continuously for 24 hours. At the end, he had pedalled his way from 15th place on his first lap to ninth place.

SOUTHPARK - In other parts of the country, Sept. 28 still qualifies as summer. And since we were on our mountain bikes, it might as well have been the Fourth of July.
